HTC Droid Incredible – Reboot Issue

by Christopher

Owning an HTC Incredible since April 30, 2010, I can say that I have discovered just about every quirk there is with this device.  What I thought was my biggest gripe, the battery, has recently been trumped by the fact that my device reboots often, for no reason at all;  in the middle of the night, after texting, after a phone call, etc.  It doesn’t matter.

It seems that this issue is more common that previously thought.  Although, in the VZW forums, my particular rebooting issue wasn’t mentioned, nor was there any solution that worked for me.  What I discovered, after factory resetting my phone (an idea from the VZW forums), was that the device rebooted while mounting the SD card.

Long story short, if your HTC Incredible is rebooting constantly, try pulling/formatting the SD card.  This fixed my issue so far and hopefully helps someone out there.  You might have to reinstall some apps but it beats having to pull your battery constantly.

Hey Christopher, I have spent the last few weeks of “phone hell” with my Droid Incredible. The rebooting issue has been very frustrating, but what made it worse is that none of the techs at Verizon (including their 2nd tier techs) knew anything about the rebooting issue. When they had no answers, they interfaced me with HTC to see if they could fix the issue. What resulted, was HTC and Verizon began pointing fingers at each other for the problem with no viable solutions and I, the consumer is stuck with a phone that is not working. The rebooting was so bad, I could not even make a phone call without the phone resetting. I finally searched the internet and located your article. I decided to format the SD card as you suggested to stop the rebooting. At this stage . . . all is well and the phone has not rebooted since. I wish I had read your article and saved myself 4.5 hours of time talking to clueless techs at Verizon & HTC. You saved me big time, buddy.

hello christopher. my phone is having the same problem, but not with me. i sold my droid htc incredible because i bought a different phone. it was not having any problems at all when i sold it. The day after, i got an email from the buyer saying it constantly reboots she cannot get it to stay on at all. i called Verizon and so did she, they said both times it could be an issue with reception and a whole bunch of other stuff it could be , however they didn’t say how to fix it and since its past the 1yr warranty they will not send another one. I am trying to help this lady with “our” issue to get her phone back to the working condition i had it in. if you could email me a step by step for pulling/formatting the SD card, we would appreciate it.

Hi Chris,

I recently started experiencing this problem and, after doing some searches, found your website. I’m curious to try the solution you suggest, but was wondering what the best way to format the sdcard is. Did you use your phone to format the card? Or Windows? Also, when you reformatted, did you format to FAT or FAT32? Thanks so much for your help – hope this fixes the problem!

Hope it helps! I formated my card via the phone – that way it places the proper folders, etc., on there. Good luck!!!
